New website launched

I’ve finally got round to launching a dedicated website for my genealogical pursuits, and have chosen the name Distant Kin. I previously mixed my genealogy posts with web development posts on my personal website, nmcmahon.co.uk, which now focuses solely on web development and has recently been given a facelift too. In hindsight, I think merging the two was a bit confusing for visitors visiting for either subject.

I have also set up separate Twitter and Facebook accounts for Distant Kin, and I’ve attempted to migrate any followers across to the new accounts.

I plan to add some more content to this site as time goes on, such as a Resources page with document transcriptions, certificates and perhaps a surname index. I eventually plan to offer professional genealogy services too, but there are a few processes I need to go through before I feasibly can.

The blog is now powered by WordPress instead of the previous content management system that I wrote myself. Although that was easy for myself to manage and customise, WordPress is definitely a better choice. I can rely on the plethora of features already available rather than having to develop them myself as and when I need them.
